Biography
Born in Nabari, Mie Prefecture, as Hirai Tarō. His pen name is a Japanese phonetic rendering of "Edgar Allan Poe". Graduated from the Political Economy Department of Waseda University. He debuted in 1923 with "The Two-Sen Copper Coin" (Nisen Dōka) in the magazine "Shin Seinen". Major works include "The Psychological Test" (Shinri Shiken), "The Beast in the Shadows" (Injū), "The Fiend with Twenty Faces" (Kaijin Nijū Mensō), and the long-running "Boy Detectives Club" (Shōnen Tantei-dan) series. He is widely regarded as the father of modern Japanese detective fiction.
