Biography
Born in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. Dropped out of the preparatory course at Keio University. Together with Murō Saisei, he founded the poetry magazine "Kanjō" (Feeling). His poetry collections "Howling at the Moon" (Tsuki ni Hoeru), "The Blue Cat" (Aoneko), "Lyrical Short Pieces" (Junjō Shōkyokushū), and "Ice Island" (Hyōtō), along with his theoretical work "The Principles of Poetry" (Shi no Genri) and essays on Yosa Buson, established him as the foremost modernist poet of prewar Japan.
