Biography

Born in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, in 1896 as the eldest son of a pawnshop and used-clothing dealer. Graduated from Morioka Higher Agricultural School (now Iwate University Faculty of Agriculture). Deeply devoted to Lotus Sutra Buddhism, he worked as a teacher at Hienuki Agricultural School (later Hanamaki Agricultural School) while organizing the agrarian arts movement "Rasu Chijin Kyōkai". His only works published during his lifetime — the poetry collection "Spring and Asura" (Haru to Shura, 1924) and the children's collection "The Restaurant of Many Orders" (Chūmon no Ōi Ryōriten, 1924) — sold poorly. He died unknown of acute pneumonia in 1933 at age 37. After his death, his brother Kiyoroku and the poet Takamura Kōtarō organized his manuscripts, publishing "Night on the Galactic Railroad" (Ginga Tetsudō no Yoru), "Wind Boy" (Kaze no Matasaburō), "The Nighthawk Star" (Yodaka no Hoshi), "Gauche the Cellist" (Sero-hiki no Gōshu), and "Be Not Defeated by the Rain" (Ame ni mo Makezu), which became postwar bestsellers. He is one of the most important figures of Japanese children's literature, agrarian literature, and modern poetry.
