Biography
Born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1867 as Natsume Kinnosuke. Graduated from the English Department of Tokyo Imperial University. After teaching at Matsuyama Middle School, Fifth Higher School, and Tokyo Imperial University, he studied in London from 1900 to 1902 under a Ministry of Education scholarship. He debuted in 1905 with "I Am a Cat" (Wagahai wa Neko de Aru) in the magazine Hototogisu, followed by "Botchan" and "Kusamakura". In 1907 he joined the Asahi Shimbun as its exclusive novelist, serializing "Sanshirō", "And Then" (Sorekara), "The Gate" (Mon), "Kokoro", and the unfinished "Light and Dark" (Meian). His later trilogies explored modern Japanese self-awareness under Westernization. He died in 1916 during the serialization of Meian at age 49. He mentored major writers including Akutagawa Ryūnosuke and Terada Torahiko. Along with Mori Ōgai, he is regarded as one of the two pillars of modern Japanese literature.
