Biography
Born in Takada, Niigata Prefecture, as Ogawa Kensaku. Graduated from the English Department of Waseda University. In 1910 he made his debut as a children's author with "The Red Ship" (Akai Fune). Major works include "The Red Candle and the Mermaid" (Akai Rōsoku to Ningyo) and "The Golden Ring" (Kin no Wa). He produced a vast body of fairy tales that defined modern Japanese children's literature.
