Biography
Born in 1906 in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, as Sakaguchi Heigo. Graduated from the Department of Indian Philosophy and Ethics at Toyo University. He debuted in 1931 with "Doctor Wind" (Kaze Hakase) under the recommendation of Makino Shin'ichi. After World War II, his essays "On Decadence" (Daraku-ron, 1946) and "A Personal View of Japanese Culture" (Nihon Bunka Shikan, 1942) caused a sensation, making him a central figure of the Burai-ha (Decadent school) alongside Dazai Osamu and Oda Sakunosuke. His major fiction includes "The Idiot" (Hakuchi, 1946), "In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom" (Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita, 1947), "The Woman Who Washed the Blue Demon's Loincloth", the mystery "The Non-Serial Murder Case" (Furenzoku Satsujin Jiken, winner of the Detective Writers Club Prize), and historical essays "Ango Shitan" and "Ango Kōdan". Despite suffering from amphetamine addiction, he produced a vast body of work and died of cerebral hemorrhage in 1955 at age 48.
