Biography

Born in Magome, Shinano Province (now Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture). Graduated from Meiji Gakuin. As a member of the literary coterie "Bungakukai", he first published the poetry collection "Wakanashū" (Young Greens). He then turned to fiction, producing major naturalist novels including "The Broken Commandment" (Hakai), "Spring" (Haru), "Family" (Ie), "A New Life" (Shinsei), and the epic historical novel "Before the Dawn" (Yoake Mae). He is considered a foundational figure of Japanese naturalism.
