Biography

Born in 1886 in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. He dropped out of the Japanese Literature Department of Tokyo Imperial University. He participated in founding the Second Shinshichō and debuted in 1910 with "The Tattooer" (Shisei). After the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, he relocated to the Kansai region, which deeply influenced his later work. He produced major works including "Naomi" (Chijin no Ai), "Some Prefer Nettles" (Tade Kuu Mushi), "A Portrait of Shunkin" (Shunkinshō), "The Makioka Sisters" (Sasameyuki), "The Key" (Kagi), "Diary of a Mad Old Man" (Fūten Rōjin Nikki), as well as a celebrated modern Japanese translation of "The Tale of Genji". His themes — fetishism, female deification, traditional Japanese aesthetics, and the contrast between modernity and tradition — defined his unique aesthetic. He was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize in Literature and is regarded as one of the greatest Japanese novelists of the twentieth century.
