Biography
Born in Tokyo and raised in Kōchi. At the Fifth Higher School, he studied English under Natsume Sōseki. Graduated from the Physics Department of Tokyo Imperial University. As a geophysicist, he served as professor at Tokyo Imperial University and principal researcher at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (Riken), while publishing essays in the Asahi Shimbun, Hototogisu, Chūōkōron, and elsewhere. His essays uniquely combine scientific observation with literary reflection.
